Hallmark Cup Winner: Tony Boswell Recognize the name? Tony Boswell, 15-year-old winner of the 1995 Hallmark Cup, is a repeat champion, the third time the Hallmark Cup has been won by the same skier in consecutive years in its 20 year history. This year, Tony's solid improvements included some personal bests and a silver medal at the Canadian Championships, and put him in front for the Cup again. The OWSA has presented the Hallmark Cup for 20 years to Ontario's most improved tournament skier. To qualify, skiers under 25 years old must enter three Ontario tournaments in the previous and current year. Points are calculated based on the difference between last years' and this years' best scores in each event, compared with the current world record- a step which prevents novice competitors (whose scores improve fastest) from winning each year. Previous winners of the Hallmark Cup include present and ex- National Team skiers such as Judy Messer, Jeff McClintock, Matt Rini, Doug Ross and last year's winner, Tom Muir, so Tony Boswell is in good company. Tony got started in skiing at age 5 when the family moved to their home on the river. The Robertson family (well known to tournament skiers) have a cottage nearby, and they were responsible for encouraging young Tony, and pointing him toward tournament skiing. He won his first tournament, the Kawartha Novice event held annually in Peterborough, at age 11 and the following year began entering sanctioned events. Tony's favourite events are slalom and jump; his mother says he's out on the water as soon as the ice breaks in spring, combining water skiing with competition in track (summer) and hockey (winter). Tony, who gets coaching at Rini's Ski School near Kingston, has his sights set on the 1997 Canada Summer Games. Looks like he's right on schedule! Our thanks to Hallmark Cards Canada for continuing to sponsor this important award for Ontario water skiers. 1995 Hallmark Cup standings 1. Tony Boswell 511 points 2. Jon Kelly 420 points 3.
