Ontarian Susi Graham of Kitchener - and World Slalom Record Holder - won the first stop of the Bud Water Ski Tour in Orlando, Florida Apr. 29/30. Fellow Ontarian, Jeremy Kovak of Millgrove finished third in the wakeboard competition. Graham scored 4 buoys on an 11.25m line (38 off), edging out Kristi Overton of the USA for the womens slalom title. In the wakeboard series, Scott Byerly (USA) set a new world record with 20,620 points, followed by team mate Dean Lavelle. Kovak was third with 18, 560 points followed by his team mate, Jeff Heer of Richmond, BC. In mens jump, US skiers Carl Roberge and Sammy Duvall were 1st and 2nd respectively, ahead of Bruce Neville of Australia and Jaret Llewellyn of Canada, who placed 4th with a jump of 190 feet (57.9m). AUSTRAILIAN RESULTS GOOD FOR CANADIANS Canadians also skied well at the first two pro events of the year, held in early March in Australia. Canada was represented by three skiers for the first event, Oz Ski Tournament in Myuna Bay: Jaret Llewellyn (Innisfail, Alta.), Jim Clunie (Tisdale, Sask.) and Kim deMacedo (Shawnigan Lake, BC.) OZ SKI Jim Clunie won the jump competition, posting 57.3m, ahead of Bruce Neville and American Scot Ellis. Llewellyn was 4th at 53.4m. He also posted a 4th place finish in tricks (behind winner Nic Leforestier of France - 10,180 pts) and 5th in slalom, just 2 buoys behind Steve Cockeram of New Zealand, who scored 4 buoys on an 11.25m line (38 off). Kim deMacedo had an excellent tournament tying for second in jumping (38.2m) with Emma Sheers of Australia behind winner Bretta Grebe of Austria, who jumped 38.6m. In slalom, deMacedo finished 3rd with a score of 3 @ 12m, just 1.5 buoys behind winner, Helena Kjellander of Sweden. There was no womens trick event, so deMacedo entered the mens division - and finished 7th! MOOMBA MASTERS And the great scores just continued to pile up for Canadians at the next event, the Moomba Masters in Melbourne, Kim deMacedo won the womens trick competition with 5,740 points ahead of Sarah Gatty-Saunt of Great Britain and Sally Morris of Australia. She then went on to finish 2nd in slalom behind Gatty-Saunt, but ahead of Helena Kjellander. In jumping, deMacedo posted 39.3m for 3rd place behind Bretta Grebe and winner Emma Shears (41.2m). Her performances brought deMacedo the overall gold, making her medal count for the weekend two firsts, one second and one third! On the mens side, Jim Clunie continued his winning ways with a jump of 55.3m, finishing ahead of Bruce Neville and Scot Ellis. Jaret Llewellyn finished 4th. In tricks, Llewellyn finished second (9.820 points) behind Nic Leforestier (10,470 pts.). That performance gave Llewellyn second place overall for the event. CANADIANS INVITED TO PRESTIGIOUS US MASTERS Six Canadians have been invited to compete in the 36th US Masters Water Ski Tournament May 26 - 28. They are among the worlds best skiers who will compete in the Masters and Junior Masters that weekend. The Canadians include Jim Clunie and Jaret Llewellyn in the mens competition; Kim deMacedo and Susi Graham in the womens competition; Jeremy Kovak in the wakeboard event and Tricia Anderson (from BC) in the junior competition. Other Canadians may qualify for the competition through the Last Chance Challenge, scheduled for the weekend before in Florida.
