Short Lines NEED SUNGLASSES? TRY HOBIES! The OWSA is pleased to announce its association with Hobie Sunglasses, the Official Supplier of Sunglasses to the OWSA for 1994. Hobie will be supporting our Pro Clinic and Instructors' Course pro- grams, and will also be extending a discount to all 1994 OWSA members (see page 4 for details.) YOUNG & OLD Who's the youngest skier you've ever heard of? Who's the oldest? Send in your photos and stories and we'll run them in the fall issue. 1994 Membership Draw Winners For several years the OWSA has offered prizes donated by Canadian water sports distributors and retailers as prizes in our draw held for members who join the OWSA at or before the Toronto International Boat Show. This year, with the availability of the largest number of prizes ever, we covered two shows - the Boat Show and the Cottage Life Show- and drew the winners' names April 4, 1994. We also held a non- members draw for vistors to the OWSA booth at these two shows. Our thanks to all the prize contributors who helped make our promotion such a success. Attendance at the Show, held at the International Centre near Toronto Airport, exceeded expectations and the OWSA booth was busy: or was it just the free deodorant samples they were handing out next door? Cottage Life Magazine had just profiled our new Water Ski Pro Clinic program in their pre-show issue and many show-goers asked how to bring a Clinic to their lake. Thanks to Cottage Life for our space, and to OWSA volunteers Chris Jackson, Nicole Maurer and Craig Rutherford who helped Paul Jurbala handle the crowds. DON'T FORGET THE CAMERA! And don't forget our photo contest! We're looking for your best shots in the Competition, Action or Atmos- phere categories before Nov. 1. CHARLIE BLACKWELL 1933-1994 Charlie Blackwell, Canada's first World Water Ski Champion, died earlier this year. Charlie won the Men's slalom event at the 1953 World Championships held at the Canadian National Exhibition, Toronto. O'BRIEN WATER SKI SKILL AWARDS The O'Brien Water Ski Skills program is available at a number of camps and ski schools across Ontario. The program offers 18 levels of achievement, ranging from beginner skiing through slalom, trick, jump, barefoot and kneeboarding. Awards are available at the bronze, silver and gold levels within each category. Crests are available at each level. The fundamentals taught through the O'Brien program will provide a lifetime of safe, proficient and exciting on-the- water activity. Originally introduced in 1975, the awards program has encouraged thousands of skiers to improve their skills at camps, ski schools and cottages across Ontario. FRIENDS OF ONTARIO WATER SKIING A number of members have made donations to the OWSA since Jan- uary 1, 1994- and in these tough times for amateur sport that makes them true Friends of Ontario Water Skiing. Remember, when you make your donation to Water Ski Canada, designate it as a gift for Ontario. For information on tax receipts, call Paul Jurbala at the OWSA. Thanks to: Ted Draper, Jeff McCli- ntock, Barbara Pepper, Craig Rut- herford, Jim Stacy, Tom Stacy and John Woodley. MICA MICA MICA MICA MICA Colin Ellis is sponsored by Mica Wetsuits. The old photo we ran in the last issue showing Colin in a different suit has been cut into a million pieces. BLAST FROM THE PAST Lance Barrs, director of Hockey Opportunity Camp (HOC), identified the kneeling figure in the HOC photo in the last issue as Dave Solomon. Dave was an instructor at HOC before becoming camp director and eventually head of computer science at Upper Canada College in Toronto. SKI COMPANIES GO UNDER Kidder, Jobe & Duvall skis were all manufactured by Esmark, which unfortunately was put into Chapter 11 (bankrupt) earlier this spring. Some stock of skis is available this year, and the Canadian distributor, LA Connection, is offering a one-year warranty on these products. Word is that at least Kidder and Duvall may be purchased and production could be underway as early as this fall. Watch for more information in the Fall issue of the Ontario Water Skier.
