TRAVELLING CLINIC CLINIC PROGRAM ON TRACK By Paul Jurbala The OWSA's Water Ski Pro Clinic program is on track for 1994. The publicity launch was at the Toronto Interna- tional Boat Show, with articles in Boating Life (Power Illustrated) and Boating Business magazines, exposure at the OWSA booth and in nearly 2,000 copies of Ontario Water Skier distributed free at the show. Response was strong, with five clinic dates booked immediately after the show - even before we could do a mailing to prospective hosts! As you'll see in the sidebar, we're moving on to the next steps of hiring the clinic team and selling the boat (amazing to think the next step is to sell the boat BEFORE we run the clinics, but if OWSA can pre-sell the MasterCraft Barefoot 200,m we'll help generate funds to keep the program going in 1995!) Initial clinic bookings came from cottage associations, who want to promote safe skiing on their lake, and, interestingly, from a company who booked the clinic for its annual picnic! As we go to print, interest in hosting clinics has been expressed by Bond Lake Water Ski Club, the Parry Sound Chamber of Commerce (there's a Georgian Bay Waterfront Festival this year) and of course MasterCraft and Mercury Marine dealers. It looks like a busy summer on the water. ABOUT THE CLINIC The Water Ski Pro Clinic program is a travelling instruc- tional clinic to be hosted by marinas, summer camps and resorts which do not have their own water ski programs, cottage associations or groups of cottagers. A team of qualified instructors will bring a Mercury Marine-equipped MasterCraft boat and a selection of O'Brien skis, kneeboards and skiboards to the host site. The instructors will assist would-be skiers just trying the sport, skiers who want to improve their skills or people who just want to try out a knee or skiboard. Costs are low. Participants will pay a maximum of $25 for two hours of instruction in a small group. The money goes to the host, who in turn pays the OWSA $250 ($300 on weekends) to purchase the program for the day. The program is sponsored by O'Brien water skis, MasterCraft boats and Mercury Marine. HIRING: Instructors for 1994 Water Ski Pro Clinic The OWSA requires two instructors for the 1994 Water Ski Pro Clinic travelling ski school program. The clinic will tour Ontario in July and August 1994, offering instructional clinics to a wide range of participants including children and new skiers. As the instructors will also act as ambassadors for the OWSA and program sponsors, the highest levels of technical expertise and professionalism will be required. Applicants should have a minimum of 2 years experi- ence as a water ski instructor, as well as experience dealing with the public and managing projects with minimum supervision. A minimum Level 1 Award of Merit from the Ontario Water Ski Instructors' Course is required, and additional qualifications in first aid and lifesaving are desirable. Applicants must be over 18 years old, and hold a valid Ontario drivers licence. Apply in writing to the Executive Director, Ontario Water Ski Association no later than April 15, 1994. In 1976, the OWSA ran another travelling clinic program with instructors Dave Collins and John Principe. 18 different sites hosted the clinic, including a number of camps, cottage and recreation groups. The clinic also attended a special clinic for handicapped children at Puslinch Lake in Cambridge. There was even one clinic held on Lake Ontario in Burlington! Here are some photos taken at some of the clinics. Can anyone identify the instructors and/or participants? [photo] Dry land training at Camp Trailfinder.
